Former Burnley and Everton boss has been tipped as a surprise replacement for Ruben Amorim after Manchester United's embarrassing Carabao Cup second round exit.
Pressure continues to mount on the Portuguese manager after United were dumped out of the League Cup on penalties by League Two side Grimsby Town, who had led 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining.
United fought back to force penalties thanks to strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire but lost 12-11 on spot-kicks.
Mbeumo, who already scored once from the spot, failed to convert the 26th when it went to sudden death and handed Grimsby a memorable victory.

United are winless this season and Amorim looked mentally broken as he sat and refused to watch penalties, before delivering an unusual post-match interview which many felt was the writing on the wall for him.
Former Southampton striker Charlie Austin is adamant that Amorim's tenure should come to an early end and already has thoughts on who United should look to bring in.
Though he named Zinedine Zidane as his No.1 target, he proceeded to put his old boss Sean Dyche in contention for the Old Trafford hotseat.

Dyche, who has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in January, named United as his dream job "because of the size of the club" during an appearance on Stick to Football.
"I think he’s got to go," Austin said in an appearance on Sky Sports News.
"If it’s my decision, I’m going after Zinedine Zidane, trying to convince him to come to Manchester United, shouldn’t need doing, but in this moment in time, you do.
"Ultimately though there’s a different lot of managers, set of managers that you’ve got to be looking at, because the situation Manchester United are in, I would take Zidane, but is he the right man for the job? As we see them probably not."

"My honest opinion, I think you’ve got to look at the job that Sean Dyche did at Burnley, what he did at Everton, for me honestly, stabilise the club, at least he’s going to put structure in there. There’s no structure.
"Zidane is the top of the tree for me, but what Manchester United need right now is structure, because that is something they do not have. They need structure, that is a man that would come in and bring structure, and make the team a lot better than what we are all seeing ultimately at the moment. Last night, we didn’t see a team."
Who is the favourite for the Man United job?
Despite Austin's recommendation, Dyche is not among the favourites for the job with the bookmakers.
