A Premier League manager is reportedly being targeted as Ruben Amorim’s potential replacement if he is to lose his job.
Some of the pressure on Amorim may have eased slightly following United’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland last time out, but the fact remains that the Red Devils have had a poor start to the 2025/26 campaign.
The Portuguese is yet to see his United team win consecutive games since he replaced Erik ten Hag as head coach back in the autumn of 2024.
As things stand, United sit tenth in the Premier League after seven games with a record of three wins, one draw and three defeats, as well as suffering an embarrassing defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup second round.

And there have been several reports suggesting that United are interested in three coaches – Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola – although contrary reports claim that minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to assess Amorim’s performance after a full season.
Amorim himself has pushed back at the suggestion that his job could be at risk despite his side’s poor form and claimed that he is “never concerned about my job” as it is not his decision to make.

Nonetheless, speculation will remain if the results do not improve soon.

A report has emerged from Spanish outlet Fichajes suggesting that a current Premier League manager could be in line to replace Amorim.
The outlet claims that Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery is being targeted by United if Amorim’s “project” doesn’t pan out.
Emery has a proven track record both in the Premier League and La Liga. The 53-year-old has won four Europa League crowns – three at Sevilla and one at Villarreal – one Ligue 1 title and two Coupe de France titles from his time with Paris Saint-Germain.
Since arriving at Aston Villa in 2022, the 53-year-old has guided the Birmingham club to European qualification three times and has never finished lower than seventh. He also helped Villa reach the quarter-finals of the 2024/25 Champions League.

It is unclear whether Emery would be willing to make the switch from Villa Park to Old Trafford, especially given the fact that he signed a five-year contract with the club in May 2024.
So, what has the Spaniard said about United in the past?
Speaking ahead of Villa’s trip to United in May 2025, Emery expressed his admiration for the 20-time Premier League champions and described the club as “the best”.

“The greatness of Manchester United is still there,” Emery said.
“The great coach they have is still there. He did a fantastic job in Sporting Lisbon, fantastic, and not for one year, not two years, not three years – consistently. When he arrived here, it was a difficult moment.”
He went on to say that he had “massive respect” for United and that he still expects “the best” for them despite their recent struggles.
