Michael Schumacher health condition plea made ahead of highly-anticipated Netflix documentary release

Michael Schumacher's friend, Marc Surer, has made a plea to his wife, Corinna, ahead of the release of a documentary about the Formula One legend.

There can be no doubt, Schumacher is one of the biggest legends, not just in motorsports history, but in the history of sports in general, something which will be discussed in an upcoming documentary set to be released on Netflix.

'Schumacher '94 – The Birth of a Legend' launches globally on the streaming platform on October 2, and ahead of the release, Surer, a retired Swiss F1 driver and friend of Schumacher, has made a plea for more of a detailed explanation on his current condition to be revealed.

Will Michael Schumacher's health condition be addressed in the new documentary?

The upcoming documentary is set to tell the story of the turbulent and historic F1 1994 season in which Schumacher, aged 25, secured the first of his seven World Championship titles.

Although the season itself is expected to be the focus, promotional material for the film has shown Schumacher's dedicated wife and carer Corinna struggling to hold back tears as she discusses her husband, leading some to think his medical condition may come up.

Schumacher has not been seen in public since he was involved in a horrific ski accident while with his son, Mick, in the French Alps in 2013, a year after he retired from F1.

The German hit his head on a rock and was airlifted to hospital for treatment on a traumatic brain injury.

He had two surgeries and was then placed in a medically-induced coma until June 2014.

Ahead of the documentary's release, Surer has admitted that he hopes that Corinna speaks about Schumacher's current condition during the documentary.

Speaking to OLBG, Surer said: “People know he's not able to walk. People know he's not able to speak now.

“But I hope at least she explains the situation. If he has a reaction, if he sees a race, if he sees other people it would be nice to know about that.

“So I hope she is a bit more open when she speaks to Netflix."

Surer, who raced in Formula One from 1979 to 1986 and competed against Michael in go-karting when they were younger, revealed that he's been in touch recently with Corinna, discussing their shared love of horses and revealed the details he knows about Michael.

He added: “The last time I saw her, we spoke about horses, because we both have horses, so we talk about horses.

“She knows that. She always asks, ‘how are your horses? And I do the same with her.

“She doesn't come now anymore to Formula 1 because Mick is not there so I have no chance to speak to her.

“The only time I heard Mick talking about Michael was when he said, ‘I would like to talk to him. I would give a lot if I could talk to him’.

“That's the only sentence I remember, when he said that in a press conference. But otherwise, no, they try to avoid it.

“It was quite a while ago, but it was when he was active in Formula 1. He said that in a press conference. And I think this said everything, you know? ‘I would give everything if I could speak to him’. So that shows the situation."

Will we ever see Michael Schumacher in public again?

As it stands, very little is known about Schumacher's current condition, with his family clearly eager to keep him away from the public eye. Surer thinks that we will never see the 57-year-old make a full public appearance again.

Surer said: “I don't know what difference it makes (to see him in public again).

“There was a situation, obviously, in Mallorca. The Spanish newspaper said he was at a wedding and they pushed him in a wheelchair. I don't know if this story is true.

“That's the only time I heard. But what for? It's better we keep the picture of how Michael was: winning, happy.

“Will we see Michael again in public? No, I don’t think so. His family would not want people to see him like that.

“(They want) to keep him in mind as he was: a happy, successful man. And that’s it. But in the documentary, I am wondering what she will say.”
