Manchester United are set to open talks to replace Michael Carrick following the club's 2-1 defeat to Leeds United at Old Trafford.
Carrick missed the opportunity to go 10 points clear of Champions League rivals Chelsea who currently sit in sixth place, following defeat to the relegation threatened Leeds.
Two first-half goals from Noah Okafor gave United a mountain to climb, and a controversial red card for Lisandro Martinez put the points out of reach despite late hope through Casermiro.
United still remain in an extremely strong position to return to UEFA's premier competition after two season's away, however, the result could prove damaging to Carrick's long-term at Old Trafford.

According to GiveMeSport, United decision makers are set to make a 'formal approach' for Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, who will be managing at the World Cup this summer.
It is understood that both Nagelsmann and Carrick are the leading candidates for the full-time job, with USA boss Mauricio Pochettino falling down the shortlist.
The report claims the German would be open to taking the job following the conclusion of his international duties in the US, Canada and Mexico, with a Premier League club a dream opportunity for him.
It is also suggested that Portugal boss and former Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been approached, but as it stands Nagelsmann remains the number one target to replace Carrick.

Carrick is not first choice, says Neville
Speaking after Monday's game against Leeds, Gary Neville agreed that his former club should persist in looking elsewhere, despite Carrick's impressive start.
"If Manchester United can get someone who's won Champions League on a regular basis, or has won titles in their own country on a regular basis, they should still pursue that route as far as I can see," he said on Monday Night Football.
However, Neville did admit that with replacement options getting more and more slim, replacing Carrick with anything less than first choice could severely backfire.
"But I have to say the more the candidates dwindle away, the more Michael gets the club towards third place, then there are obviously more advantages of keeping him, because what you can't do is take a chance in swapping him for a manager that you're not sure about," he added.
