Man Utd fans blast 'total liability' for performance vs AC Milan as Michael Carrick offered solution

Manchester United supporters criticised the performance of one player in particular during their clash against AC Milan.

Michael Carrick's men rounded off their pre-season preparations with a disappointing 4-2 defeat against AC Milan at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw.

United opened the scoring in the second minute through Harry Maguire before Samuel Chukwueze equalised in the 37th minute.

Patrick Dorgu then fired his side back in front immediately after the break before the Red Devils capitulated, conceding three second-half goals through Alphadjo Cisse, Goncalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

It was a happy reunion for former boss Ruben Amorim, who Manchester United sacked in January, and only a few players from Carrick's side could hold their heads high.

One of those was summer signing Andrey Santos, who continued his impressive pre-season form in the middle of the park, while the display also exposed some areas of the squad that INEOS must address in the final weeks of the window, including at left-back.

Luke Shaw is currently the first-choice in that position at Old Trafford after a solid 2025/26 campaign, which saw him feature in all 38 Premier League games for the first time during his injury-hit 12 years at the club.

However, with the 31-year-old's contract set to expire in June 2027, the club are looking to sign a long-term replacement for the Englishman.

Lewis Hall is Man United's top target in that position, but Newcastle United are reluctant to sell after already losing several of their key players this summer.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Joaquin Seys, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Antonee Robinson as alternatives to Hall, among others, and supporters have urged INEOS to invest in that position after watching Shaw struggle against Milan.

Shaw played the full 90 minutes on Saturday, but fans blasted the 34-cap England international for his subpar display, with one person writing: "Luke Shaw can’t be trusted".

"I need Luke Shaw replacement now," someone else commented, offering Carrick a solution to the problem. "Need a left back immediately Luke Shaw is finished," another agreed.

"Luke Shaw is awful. How Man United haven't tried to sign a couple of wing-backs is crazy," a fourth stated.

"Amorim's Milan have outplayed United so far. The CM has been stifled. Luke Shaw offers nothing. Is a total liability," a fifth posted, issuing their concerns for the campaign ahead.

An incredibly poor performance in Poland saw Shaw fail to make a single tackle, win zero ground duels and lose possession seven times.

To stand any chance of competing across all fronts in 2026/27 following their return to the Champions League, it isn't just at left back where Carrick wants fresh additions ahead of the September 1 deadline.

The United head coach wants another central midfielder and perhaps a centre-forward to bolster his squad alongside capturing a left-back.

"I think we've got a pretty good balance in all when you lay the squad out, but we would like more; we need to keep pushing for more," Carrick said in a recent press conference.

"There's one or two areas where we'd like to improve and we feel that there's the possibility to improve, but again, that needs to be something that we can do that makes us better and improves the group, whether that's quality or whether that's a little bit of depth. That's something we've got to manage. That's pretty obvious."

Man United kick off their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Hull City on August 22 before hosting Ipswich Town a week later.
