Mark Goldbridge believes that Manchester United must sell midfielder Scott McTominay this summer.

The Scotland international came through United's academy, where he started out as a striker.

But a major growth spurt led to him transitioning into a central midfielder, and he was promoted to the first team by manager Jose Mourinho at the end of the 2017/18 season.

In the subsequent season, Mourinho made up an award, the 'Jose Mourinho Player of the Season' award, and gave it to McTominay in recognition of his performances.

The Scot has remained a reliable presence in the centre of United's midfield, providing consistent displays without standing out as one of the club's key players.

But the 26-year-old fell behind others in the pecking order in the second half of last season under Erik ten Hag, leading to speculation that he may be sold this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, United have placed a £40 million asking price on the midfielder, with West Ham believed to be interested.

And Goldbridge believes United have to sell for that fee.

Goldbridge believes Man Utd should sell McTominay

Speaking on The United Stand, Goldbridge explained: "If West Ham are interested, and they want him for £40 million, or £30 million, find a middle ground.

"Don't say, 'We're going to reject £35 million', because you want £40 million. McTominay hasn't had a good game in nearly a year. He's not an established first team player. He's worth about £30 million.

"If we don't take the money for him now, you will never get that money again. That's why United need to be negotiating a deal."

Goldbridge then gave six reasons as to why McTominay should depart Old Trafford - namely the six midfielders that could be ahead of him in the pecking order.

"If you've got Casemiro, you've got Amrabat, you've got Mainoo, you've got Eriksen, you've got Mount and you've got Bruno. Where is Scott McTominay getting game time? If he is getting game time, he's taking it away from better players and better prospects.

"If West Ham are going to offer £30 million now, you cannot sit there and go, 'No, we don't need to do the deal'. You do need to do the deal.

"In a year's time, he's not going to be worth £50 million. He's going to be worth £20 million. So just do the deal."
