Scott McTominay has a clause in his Napoli contract amid speculation he could depart the Serie A champions.

The Scotland international ended his long-standing association with Manchester United in 2024 and made the move to Italy with Napoli despite Erik ten Hag being opposed to his sale.

Signed for just £25.4 million, McTominay has been a revelation in Naples and fired them to a historic third Scudetto - scoring 12 goals in the league from midfield and winning the league's Player of the Year award.

Adored by Napoli fans, McTominay has a contract which runs until 2028. But in recent times, transfer journalist Nicolo Schira claimed that clubs in the Premier League and Saudi Arabia have made offers.

There have been also been some reports linking McTominay with a return to Old Trafford, with Tuttomercatoweb claiming the Red Devils are "leading the way" to sign him.

United, however, will benefit from McTominay moving on to pastures new.

That's because when they sold the midfielder, United inserted a 10% sell-on clause so that they get a portion of any future transfer fee.

Given his incredible goalscoring exploits last season, McTominay will undoubtedly command a much higher transfer fee than he did when left for Napoli.

McTominay comments on Napoli future

As per the Manchester Evening News, the club are understood to be working on an improved contract for McTominay, one that would surely include a significant pay increase as well as a rumoured extension until 2030.

McTominay has addressed speculation regarding his future, reiterating his desire to remain at Napoli for a long time and stressing that he is "extremely happy here".

"My agent has not communicated with anyone regarding my future," McTominay told Corriere dello Sport.

"He only speaks with me and with the club. He hasn’t said anything to the newspapers. I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player; it is all I think about.

"The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time.

"I love this place. Difficulties have been minimal, my family is happy and I’m happy."

This season, Napoli are currently third, 14 points behind league leaders Inter Milan after a 2-1 defeat away at Atalanta.

McTominay has been suffering with a tendon problem that must be managed but the club feeling his absence hugely as they have not won without him in the side.

Napoli are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Hellas Verona.
