Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay could be set for a massively surprising transfer after redefining himself at Napoli.

After spending 22 years as a Red Devil playing for both the academy and first-team, McTominay left Manchester United in the summer of 2024.

The Scotland captain moved to the Serie A as part of a £25.7m deal with Napoli and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Just months after leaving Old Trafford, McTominay was named named Serie A's MVP (most valuable player) after he finished the 2024/25 season with 12 Serie A goals while Napoli won the league.

His impressive form has led to rumours that McTominay could soon leave Napoli, and a new report has claimed that there is one club that stand as the firm favourites to secure his signature.

Since McTominay's move to Napoli, the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle United and Barcelona have all been linked with a transfer for the Scotsman.

However, according to Italian publication Tutttomercatoweb, it is Manchester United that are ‘leading’ the race to sign McTominay in what would be a spectacular return to Old Trafford.

The report claims that McTominay is ‘dreaming of a return’ to England, and that United could be the perfect option.

It states that McTominay remains happy in Napoli but would like the chance to return to his former club having proved himself abroad should he be given the opportunity to do so.

Should it become clear that McTominay is eager to return to the Premier League, it is likely that several clubs will launch a bid for the 29-year-old.

And with his contract with Napoli running until 2028, it's likely that the Italian club would demand a large fee for their star midfielder, with TransferMarkt estimating his value at around £39m.

But, the report goes against a previous claim from Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via football365, that insisted that McTominay intends to saty at Napoli for the forseeable future.

It claims that both McTominay and Napoli are eager to pen a contract renewal, with an offer to keep him at the club until 2030 believed to be in negotiations.
