Scott McTominay has developed into one of Manchester United's most important players but it was Jose Mourinho who first recognised his potential.

The Portuguese manager not only gave him his debut back in 2017 but also invented his own award to give him some recognition at United's end of season awards event in 2018.

David De Gea picked up the Players' Player of the Year and the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards after a stunning individual campaign in between the sticks but Mourinho decided to name McTominay as his 'Manager's Player of the Year'.

The Scotland international, who broke through and featured 20 times that season under Mourinho, was called up to receive the prize and posed for a picture with his boss.

Presenting the award, Mourinho said: "The dream of every boy that arrives in the club is to play for the 1st team. The next dream is to play big matches in the Champions League and to play for the national team.

"This player did this everything in five or six months so my player of the year has to be Scott McTominay."

Speaking to Sky Sports in October 2019, McTominay praised the impact of Jose Mourinho on his career.

He said: "Jose is very special to me He still keeps in contact with me now and keeps in touch after some games.

"He'll always have a special place in mine and my family's heart because he's the one who brought you in, he was the one who trusted you, he was the one who had belief in you.

"I owe a tremendous amount of credit to him because if it wasn't for him I might not necessarily be sitting in this seat."

Thoughts on McTominay's form this season for United?
