Manchester United have a plan in place after sacking Ruben Amorim, which involves appointing a caretaker manager until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Amorim was informed of his dismissal on Monday morning, after the club's leadership team "reluctantly decided" it was the right time to make a change following a turbulent 14-month spell in charge.
Having taken over in November 2023, Amorim managed to win only 38.1 per cent of his matches in all competitions (24 out of 63), which is the third-lowest of any permanent manager in the club's history.
United reportedly made the call to sack Amorim before Sunday's 1-1 draw against Leeds United following a tense meeting between Amorim and Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football, about the go-to 3-4-3 system.
It was also announced on Monday that former midfielder Darren Fletcher will take interim charge of United for their upcoming Premier League clash against Burnley.
Fletcher, who is currently in charge of United's under-18 team, has never managed at senior level but has held multiple roles since hanging up his boots, including assistant coach, technical coach and technical director.
However, it appears the 41-year-old will not be around the first team for much longer.

The BBC report: "A significant update to bring to you. We're hearing that Manchester United hope to appoint a caretaker for the rest of the season and that person won't be Darren Fletcher, who is taking charge of their next match against Burnley on Wednesday."
United have seen ten managers come and go since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and they will be on the lookout for another permanent candidate in the coming months. But who will it be?
Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner is one of the frontrunners to take over at Old Trafford.
Glasner, who joined Palace in February 2024 following successful stints in Germany at Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, led the club to their first major trophy in May last year, when they lifted the FA Cup.
Glasner is being strongly linked with the United job. Image credit: Getty It was suggested in October last year that Glasner would take the United job 'in a heartbeat' if it was offered to him.
"My information is that if Oliver Glasner was offered the Manchester United job, he would take it in a heartbeat," said journalist Ben Jacobs.
"As a consequence, Manchester United will feel there are quality managers, and some with Premier League experience, that will be willing to move. There are options closer to home."
Jacobs added: "I don't think Glasner playing a similar system to Ruben Amorim will really put off Manchester United."
Enzo Maresca, Laurent Blanc and Xavi Hernandez have also been priced up by the bookies alongside former England manager Gareth Southgate.
