Gary Neville named five clubs he could have seen himself playing for if he was sold by Manchester United.

Neville spent his entire career at his boyhood club, coming through the ranks as a youngster and playing 602 times after making his debut in 1992.

The 49-year-old won 16 major trophies with United, including eight Premier League titles, prior to announcing his retirement in 2011.

Along with long-time teammates Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, the former England international was a one-club man and claimed that "leaving never once entered my head".

Neville never received any offers to play elsewhere and decided that if he was told by Sir Alex Ferguson that his time was up in his thirties, he wouldn't have played for another club.

Although it was his decision in the end, Neville does admit he would have looked to join another club in the Premier League if he was 28 and still performing. He immediately ruled out rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Leeds and said he wouldn't have played for them "in a million years".

However, he named Arsenal, Aston Villa and Newcastle as clubs he admired in England - as well as expressing respect for European giants Juventus and Bayern Munich.

"However, if he’d come to me at say the age of 28, and told me my time was up, of course I would have played for another Premier League club," Neville said on the Sky Sports Off Script podcast.

"Who would I have played for? You can rule out three: I’d have never have played for [Manchester] City, Liverpool or Leeds. Not in a million years.

"I don’t feel anything bad towards the players who did that, but me personally, I couldn’t have done it. The rivalry is just too much.

"If you’d said to me, in a perfect world, in my years of playing, which clubs in the Premier League have the tradition, a proper club? Arsenal would be No 1.

"The tradition of Highbury, I felt they did things the right way. Also in the Premier League, I like Aston Villa and Newcastle.

"In Europe I admired Juventus and Bayern Munich. I respected them as football clubs. Bayern were meticulous in their preparation, so internationally, it would be them."

After hanging up his boots, Neville had a spell in coaching with the England national team and managed Valencia, but has kept himself busy with punditry and co-commentating for Sky, as well as co-owning Salford City, a production company and six buildings in Manchester.
