Manchester United set a new record in the FA Cup as they narrowly beat Nottingham Forest to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

United were far from their best on Wednesday night but scraped into the last eight with a 1-0 win at the City Ground.

Erik ten Hag's side struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the game but snatched victory in the penultimate minute of normal time, Casemiro scoring the winner to secure a vital victory for the Old Trafford club.

It keeps alive their hopes of silverware this season and sets up a mouth-watering clash in the next round with rivals Liverpool, who beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield.

United have now reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for record 48th time, more than any other club.

They were previously tied with Everton on 47 quarter-final appearances prior to their win over Forest.

United have won the competition 12 times, the second-most of any time behind only Arsenal (14).

Carabao Cup winners Liverpool are joint-third on the all-time list, having won the FA Cup eight times in their history.

Speaking after the win over Forest, United defender Victor Lindelof was quick to praise veteran midfielder Casemiro for the winner.

"Casemiro is very good at the timing of everything," said Lindelof.

"He's a clever player. He's done that a couple of times in his career. It was a perfect ball from Bruno Fernandes and a perfect execution from Casemiro."

United manager Ten Hag was delighted to be on the right side of a late goal, having seen his side lose in dramatic circumstances to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.

"It’s the best time to score at the end. On Saturday we felt a defeat in stoppage time [against Fulham],” Ten Hag told the BBC.

"We scored in the right moment. In the second half after five or six minutes we found the game. Then we were continually in their half and took control of the game."
