Manchester City appeared to aim a subtle dig at rivals Manchester United following Pep Guardiola’s side’s 2-0 win over Salford City in the FA Cup fourth round.

Guardiola’s team progressed to the fifth round, with an own goal from Salford’s Alfie Dorrington putting the home side ahead after six minutes before Marc Guehi made it 2-0 with nine minutes to play.

League Two side Salford, who are owned by Project 92 Limited – a consortium consisting of former Manchester United stars Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville, and Paul Scholes – will likely be pleased with their performance after seeing League One team Exeter City suffer a 10-1 trouncing against Man City in round three.

Despite being a separate football club from their more famous neighbours, Man Utd, the connection between the two clubs is deep-rooted, given who owns Salford.

As a result, Man City could not help but aim a subtle dig at the Red Devils on social media shortly after Saturday’s game.

“A win to mark our 41st game of the season,” a post on City’s X account read.

Of course, United went out of the Carabao Cup in the second round against Grimsby back in August before exiting the FA Cup in the third round against Brighton in January.

Michael Carrick’s side have also been without European football as a result of losing last season’s Europa League final, while finishing 15th in the Premier League.

This means United will have played 40 games – 38 in the Premier League, one in the Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup – by the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

However, with the side currently fifth in the Premier League, United will likely return to either Champions League or Europa League football next term.

Still, fans offered their thoughts on the post via social media:

One said: "Cook that other Manchester club."

Another added: "41 games you say! Why, that’s already 1 more than Manchester United will complete this season!"

While a third claimed: "Admin, I see what you’re doing here! Mocking Manchester United who will play 40 games all season."

Guardiola's side return to action at home against Newcastle United in the Premier League next Saturday (February 21).
