The draw for the FA Cup quarter-finals has taken place and has produced a potential mouth-watering clash between two of English football's biggest clubs.

Manchester United and Liverpool could meet in the last eight of the competition if they win their respective fifth round matches on Wednesday night.

Liverpool host Southampton at Anfield, while United travel to face Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool drew 0-0 with United in the Premier League earlier this season, with the return league fixture at Old Trafford still to come on April 7.

The two teams last met in the FA Cup in 2021, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a late winner for United in a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Holders Manchester City have already booked their place in the last eight of the FA Cup with an emphatic 6-2 win at Luton on Tuesday night, in which Erling Haaland scored five goals for the Premier League champions.

They have been rewarded with a home tie against Newcastle United, who narrowly beat Blackburn Rovers on penalties.

Chelsea could take on Championship leaders Leicester if they beat another second-tier side, Leeds United, in their round of 16 match on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, either Wolves or Brighton will face the lowest-ranked team left in the FA Cup, Championship side Coventry City - who thrashed Maidstone United 5-0 on Monday night.

All four quarter-final ties will be played across the weekend of March 16-17, with the semi-finals to be staged on the weekend of April 20.

The final will be staged as usual at the home of English football, Wembley, with the showpiece event taking place this year on May 25.
