The family of Manchester United legend Denis Law have announced that he has passed away at the age of 84.

An official statement from the Law family on Friday evening confirmed the tragic news that the United icon had passed away.

The Scottish forward scored an incredible 237 goals for the Red Devils, making him the third highest goalscorer in the clubs history behind only Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney.

In total, Law made 406 appearances for United, and lives on through the iconic statue of him alongside close friends and teammates Charlton and George Best which stands outside of Old Trafford.

“It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace," Law's family wrote in a statement.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

An official Manchester United statement added: "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84.

"With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club's greatest and most beloved players. The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.

"Our deepest condolences go out to Denis' family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more."

Law is seen by many as United's best-ever striker and remains the only man to have two statues dedicated to him at Old Trafford.

He won several of the sport's biggest team and individual trophies, including the 1964 Ballon d'OR, two English Football League First Division titles and one European Cup.

The forward had 55 caps for Scotland, having made his senior debut at the age of 18 in 1958, and remains his country's joint all-time leading goalscorer with 30 goals alongside Kenny Dalglish.

Our thoughts and condolences go to Denis Law's family and friends.
