Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is set to sign for a new club several weeks after leaving Manchester United, according to reports.

Man Utd and Eriksen parted ways when his contract expired at the end of last season, bringing his three-year stay to an end.

Eriksen played 73 times for the Red Devils in the Premier League and left with his head held high despite the club's difficulties during his time at Old Trafford.

Having been unable to finalise a move inside the transfer window or before the start of the new season, the 33-year-old is understood to be on the cusp of signing for German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

"The Danish superstar has been convinced to play for Wolfsburg with Peter Christiansen as the top football boss," reports Farzam Abolhosseini for Tipsbladet.

"The Bundesliga club has agreed with the greatest Danish football player of recent times on a contract, and only formalities need to be sorted out before everything goes smoothly.

"A plane flew from Odense to Braunschweig today with Christian Eriksen on board.

"Now all that's left is a medical check and a contract signing."

The medical is of course a matter of particular scrutiny in Eriksen's case. The former Ajax youngster has been screened by both Brentford and United since leaving Inter Milan in 2022, but his departure from the Italian club was enforced on medical grounds.

After he collapsed on the pitch while playing in a European Championship match in Copenhagen in 2021, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to perform defibrillation when a person's heart rate exceeds safe levels.

ICD devices are fitted to help prevent sudden cardiac death but are not permitted in Serie A.

Eriksen's second spell in England

The position of Italian authorities meant Eriksen left Serie A prematurely, returning to the Premier League for a short stint at Brentford and a switch to the Red Devils in the summer of 2022.

Now considered a veteran player and possessed of the kind of quality on the ball that gets better with age and isn't reliant on pace or power, Eriksen still has plenty to offer and seems a suitable fit for the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg, who count Danish ex-player Christiansen among their managing directors, have picked up four points in their first two matches of 2025-26, beating Heidenheim before a home draw against Mainz.
