The result of the upcoming Premier League clash between Chelsea and Manchester United could lead to a shocking scenario coming true.

On Friday, Chelsea will welcome former rivals United to Stamford Bridge for a Premier League clash that could ultimately decide if the Blues will qualify for Champions League football next season.

Meanwhile, United are in a completely different scenario as they currently sit 16th in the table, leaving them with nothing to play for as they maintain a 17 point gap to the relegation zone with just two games left this season.

However, the result of the game could cause an almost unbelievable scenario to come true, and it's not good for United fans.

With United set to finish anywhere between 13th and 17th on the table, the 2024/25 season has by far been the club's worst since the Premier League was created in 1992.

Historic rivals Liverpool lifting their 20th domestic title this season, matching United's total, adds further insult to injury for United fans this season, making this season one to forget.

But should they lose or draw with Chelsea on Friday, then things will get even worse, as they will be guaranteed to finish at least 40 points behind Liverpool, which will be the biggest points difference between the clubs in history.

As pointed out the journalist Dominic King, despite the fact that both sides have undergone relegations when playing in the Football League First Division, the gap between them both has never reached 40 or more.

Currently, the gap between the two clubs is 44 points, with Liverpool on top with 89 points and United sitting with a dismal 39 points.

In an interview assessing United's season, Amorim told Sky Sports: "I'm really embarrassed that in 26 games [his league games in charge], we win six, and something is wrong in the way we play football. And sometimes it's not about how we play tactically and technically.

"It's the way we face competition, the way we suffer, the way we get mad because we're losing and the way we protect the goal. These things we need to improve and sometimes it's just inside the pitch, it's outside the pitch.

"We are in Manchester United and we don't want to be the worst in the league."
