Bradley Barcola will immediately hold Liverpool record when £120m deal completes that will delight Andoni Iraola

Bradley Barcola will immediately become the holder of an important record among the current Liverpool squad once he joins the club - and it will hold even more significance for head coach Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool reached an agreement in principle with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the France international winger for a fee totalling £120 million.

It would not break the Reds' existing transfer record, which will still be held by the £125 million spent on Alexander Isak last year, but it is a major signal of intent in the closing days of the transfer window.

Liverpool have been chasing the 23-year-old for much of the summer, but PSG would not budge on their initial asking price of €150 million (£128m).

They are in desperate need of more options on the wings, which had already been identified as a key area for improvement even before Mohamed Salah's departure as a free agent.

Osasuna winger Victor Munoz was signed on July 1 but, with Rio Ngumoha the only other natural winger in the squad, Barcola's arrival will be much-needed in more ways than one.

Among the positives Barcola will bring to Anfield is his pace, with the France international registered as one of the fastest players in the Champions League last season.

The Reds are not particularly blessed with pace, though Jeremie Frimpong was ranked among the top 10 quickest players in the Premier League last season in terms of top speed.

But his highest speed of 36.18km/h is lower than Barcola, who registered a high mark of 36.7km/h during last season's Champions League.

That means that Barcola will immediately assume the mantle of being the fastest player in Liverpool's squad once he arrives at Anfield.

His quickest Champions League top speed was beaten only by four other players - PSG team-mates Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Hernandez, Pafos striker Landry Dimata and Bayer Leverkusen frontman Patrik Schick.

In comparison to Premier League players, only Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli (36.74km/h) and Wolves right-back Jackson Tchatchoua (36.97km/h and 37.3km/h) registered quicker top speeds than Barcola in English football.

When could Bradley Barcola make his debut for Liverpool?

Should Liverpool officially sign Barcola before Friday's 12pm deadline, he would be eligible to make his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

Much more likely, however, is that Barcola is able to play some part in Liverpool's away clash against Ipswich Town on September 4.

But the 23-year-old hasn't played any part in PSG's pre-season programme, having first taken time off following the World Cup before then being made unavailable until his future was resolved.

He also did not feature in PSG's 2-2 draw with Rennes on the opening day of the Ligue 1 season.

It could be, therefore, that Liverpool fans don't see Barcola in action until September 12, when the Reds host Fulham at Anfield in their fourth Premier League fixture of the season.
