Bradley Barcola deal could trigger Liverpool domino effect as Iraola breaks silence

Andoni Iraola has addressed reports that Liverpool have finally competed a deal for Bradley Barcola, leaving Cody Gakpo's future uncertain.

After being linked with Paris Saint-Germain superstar Barcola for the entire summer, it appears that Liverpool may finally have secured a deal for the exciting forward.

Although it is yet to be finalised, it is believed that a fee of £100million plus an additional £20m in bonuses has now been fixed and it is only a matter of time until the announcement is made.

Barcola will arrive as Liverpool's second most expensive signing of all time, behind last summer's deal for Alexander Isak (£130m), and will likely immediately secure a starting role in Iraola's squad.

However, when asked for his thoughts on the deal, Iraola kept his cards close to his chest, refusing to acknowledge that the signing was secured.

He said: “As you know, we are trying to sign in that position. We can't talk about players who right now aren't ours.

"But we are trying to improve and fill that position as we don't have the numbers. I hope we have good news soon but we are still not there.”

The Basque manager continued: “I don't know what's going to happen. Even myself, I have to be patient.

“Then we get to September 2, this is who we have and the options we have, then we can start thinking.

“For now we don't know. I have in my head what I want, we've been talking since the beginning with the club, they know what we want. It's about closing the deals.

“There are certain things we can but it's true we need players in the wide areas. I'm sure if we can improve other areas we will but I don't know how the market is going to finish.

“I have to be patient as well as you. It's very uncomfortable for me as you are dealing with uncertainties all the time. In four or five days we will know what we have and then we can make proper plans.”

The deal marks the first of what is expected to be a busy period for Liverpool ahead of the transfer window shutting on September 1, with at least one more signing expected in the coming days.

But it's not just incomings that Liverpool will likely be working on before the window closes, as the signing of Barcola could lead to a domino effect resulting in the departure of Cody Gakpo.

The Dutchman, who scored Liverpool's first goal of the season during the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United, has strongly been linked with Tottenham Hotspur throughout the summer.

And with Barcola certain to take Gakpo's spot as Liverpool's starting left-winger, the 27-year-old may look to progress the links.

“After the performance he had in first game I say the same, he's playing very well for us. He's been very good since he's been back from World Cup. The right attitude and I hope we can keep him at that level," Iraola said when asked about Gakpo's future.

“He can be very influential on us. When the market is open and we bring in expensive players, I cannot guarantee anything. But I don't know.

“Our players, I cannot guarantee anything about how many we are going to sign or whatever. Experience tells us that if there's an opportunity the last day you can do something.”

If Gakpo is to leave Liverpool, it is believed the Reds would be looking for a fee of around £75m.

But with Spurs recently completing two major signings, bringing in Savinho and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City for a combined £145m, the London club may now choose to walk away from any deal for Gakpo.
