Manchester United fans have reacted with astonishment after Andre Onana's debut for Trabzonspor produced a major surprise.

Onana, 29, has failed to live up to expectations since joining United from Inter Milan for £47m in 2023.

After a series of costly errors, Onana finally lost the trust of United boss Ruben Amorim and was replaced as No 1 by Altay Bayindir earlier this season - with the Red Devils also signing Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for around £18m on deadline day.

As a result, Onana was allowed to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan earlier this week - reportedly doubling his weekly wage in the process.

Bayindir kept his place in the United goal for Sunday's derby against Manchester City, but things didn't go to plan as Amorim's side were thrashed 3-0 at the Etihad.

Onana, meanwhile, was thrown straight into action at Trabzonspor - starting against Turkish giants Fenerbahce on Sunday.

He was up against a familiar face in former Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who is now No 1 at the Istanbul club following his departure from the Etihad earlier this summer.

And in the end it was Ederson who came out on top, with Fenerbahce claiming a 1-0 win at home.

Onana was at fault for the only goal of the match, parrying a shot from the edge of the box back into danger - with Fenerbahce's Sebastian Szymanski quickest to the rebound to set up Youssef En-Nesyri for the winner.

However, despite his error, Onana was surprisingly named Man of the Match.

He made eight saves in total after Trabzonspor were reduced to ten men following a red card for Okay Yokuslu, with the Cameroonian managing to keep the score respectable for the visitors.

United fans were quick to react to Onana's performance.

"I always say it. Any player that leaves Man U always [will] have peace of mind," joked one fan on X.

"No way," replied another to a screenshot of Onana's 8.7 match rating on FotMob.

While another simply put: "Man United is the problem."

Several players in recent years have enjoyed an upturn in form immediately after leaving United, including Antony and Scott McTominay.

Antony scored nine goals in 26 appearances on loan at Real Betis last season, later joining the club on a permanent deal, while McTominay played a key role in Napoli's Serie A triumph - picking up the Player of the Season award with 12 goals in their title-winning campaign.

Onana will be hoping he enjoys a similar resurgence at Trabzonspor. They next face Gaziantep on Saturday in his first home match at the club.
