Max Verstappen vs 100 opponents race today will reveal never-before-seen side of F1 star thanks to unique rule

Max Verstappen will make history on Wednesday evening when he faces one of the most remarkable challenges ever undertaken by a Formula 1 star.

The Red Bull Racing driver will take part in a unique 'Max vs. 100' challenge that will see him attempt to overtake 100 drivers in just 30 laps of the famous Silverstone circuit.

The four-time world champion has been racing karts since he was four and will roll back the years with a go-karting challenge against stars from the worlds of sport, social media and television.

Unique Max vs. 100 rule will show different side of Verstappen

Max vs. 100 is a go-kart race organised by Red Bull that will challenge Verstappen to beat 100 amateur drivers at Silverstone.

The Red Bull star will start at the back of the grid and must overtake all 100 competitors ahead of him in just 30 laps. Once a competitor has been overtaken, they will be eliminated from the race, meaning Verstappen could complete the challenge with several laps to spare.

To give the amateurs a better chance of success, each competitor will be allowed to use a 'fast lap' at any point during the first 15 laps of the race. This will allow them to take a shortcut and gain ground on Verstappen.

However, to make things fair, the four-time world champion will also be allowed to use one 'fast lap', although he cannot deploy it until the final 15 laps of the race.

The race will also offer a unique insight into Verstappen's approach, with the 28-year-old able to communicate directly with the field during the race.

What are the other rules for Max vs. 100?

There will be a qualification lap to determine the grid order at Silverstone, with each amateur competitor given a single attempt to set the fastest lap time they can on the special course.

To level the playing field, every kart will also be identical, with the total weight, including the driver and their kit, set at 85kg. Ballast will be added to any kart that does not meet the requirement.

Verstappen will be able to make up plenty of ground with his raw driving ability, but the biggest challenge is likely to come from traffic. He will need excellent race management to cut through the pack and find opportunities to overtake safely whenever possible.

Although many of the competitors should not pose much of a challenge, Verstappen will also be up against several karting influencers who will relish the opportunity to race a Formula 1 world champion.

What time is Max vs. 100 and how can you watch it?

Max vs. 100 takes place at Silverstone on Wednesday, September 16, with the race scheduled to get underway at 6pm BST.

Fans can tune in an hour earlier, with live coverage beginning at 5pm BST. The event will be shown live in the UK on ESPN through Disney+ and is included as part of an existing Disney+ subscription.

Comedian Mo Gilligan will lead the broadcast, with viewers also set to be given live race data, game-inspired graphics and cinematic drone footage as Verstappen attempts to fight his way through the 100-driver field.

The race is expected to last around an hour, although Verstappen can complete the challenge earlier if he manages to overtake and eliminate all 100 opponents before the full 30 laps are completed.
