Man Utd's 'True Feelings' on Bringing Scott McTominay Back to Club Emerge

Manchester United would be open to re-signing Scott McTominay, according to a new report, while two other Premier League clubs are also said to be interested.

McTominay's decision to swap United for Napoli was inspired. As well as finishing the 2024-25 campaign with 12 goals and six assists to his name, he was nominated for the Ballon d'Or after helping Antonio Conte's side win Serie A.

The 28-year-old's departure from Old Trafford last summer has remained a big topic of conversation, one year on.

This week, former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave his thoughts on McTominay's exit. “I was almost shocked because you need a core group of local clubs who know the club and get the club, and Scott did," he said on the Stick to Football podcast.

“I think he’s showed in Italy how good of a player he is. He’s a great character with a personality you want around the place and he sets the standards. He’d survive when we played, 100 per cent.”

Despite his dream debut campaign, McTominay was linked with a departure from Napoli in the summer.

In fact, several clubs remain interested in the Scotland international, including United, who 'would have him back' at Old Trafford, according to Caught Offside.

The report says: "There is concrete interest in Scott McTominay. Manchester United would have him back, and keep an eye on Newcastle and Tottenham. Barcelona also view him as someone who could be a good fit for their midfield.”

McTominay, who made 255 first-team appearances for United, has previously admitted he was "misprofiled" during his early days at the club.

Speaking to The Athletic in April, he said: "When I got into the first team, I was quite misprofiled in where I was playing. It wasn't the fault of any coaches. My strengths have always been getting into the box, scoring goals, being a problem in there.

"But I was being used as a number six or as a centre-back, and that has never really been my game. But when you're playing for Manchester United and you're 20, you can't knock on the manager's door and say that you expect to be playing at number eight ahead of Paul Pogba. It's not realistic."

Scott McTominay would command a transfer fee of £100 million if his surname was different

That's according to former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who believes McTominay would command a transfer fee of £100 million if his name was 'McSaucio'.

Speaking on his Rio Presents podcast in May, he said: "If his name was McSaucio, he's going for £100 million. Because he's Scott McTominay and he's Scottish, nobody is talking about big fees or Real Madrid looking at him."

Ferdinand suggested the likes of Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag failed to play McTominay in his best position.

“What an upturn in fortune," he said on his podcast. "You've got to respect the way he’s gone about his business. He’s playing to type, not doing anything different from what we expect from him.

“The managers before didn’t play him in his best position. Manchester United have made a massive [mistake] in getting rid of him. He’s the type of player that you wanna keep. I wasn’t too sure if he’d start but he was definitely making an impact.”
