Pep Guardiola said Rico Lewis is missing just one thing to become one of the best players in the Premier League.

Lewis has been making a name for himself at the Etihad across the past season and a half. The 18-year-old has already featured in 30 first-team games while he is an established member of the England U21 squad.

His versatility has been put to good use by Guardiola, having featured at right-back and in central midfield at various points this term.

The youngster can pick a pass, put in a tackle, has pace to burn and good awareness for someone with a relative lack of experience.

With all of that taken into account, Guardiola told reporters the 5ft 7in prodigy is missing just one thing: a bit of height.

On the youngster, Guardiola said: “If he was a little bit taller he’d be considered one of the best players in the Premier League.

“He's an exceptional player. Last season he arrived and started to settle with us, and every game he plays to the highest standards.

“We are really really pleased that an academy player can be a regular player, really pleased.”

Lewis signed a new contract this season that has him tied to the Champions League holders through to the summer of 2028.

At this point 12 months ago, Lewis had made one senior start for Manchester City. He is now a regular, and the proud owner of four 'major' medals.

He said via BBC: "Trying to shop for food at the Co-op or Tesco and getting asked for a picture.

"I don't mind it. You dream of being a footballer."

On his medals: "They're hung up in my wardrobe. I need to find somewhere else.

"I've also kept a shirt for every kit. Anything I can hold onto, I will for the rest of my life."
