Pep Guardiola makes coaching future clear amid talks of Super Lig move to manage Mohamed Salah

Pep Guardiola’s agent has denied reports of the Spaniard moving to Turkey, where he would have linked up with former rival and Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah at Trabzonspor.

The Spaniard’s agent has since been contacted to verify those reports, confirming that Guardiola will not return to management in 2026-27, and denying rumours of a Trabzonspor move.

Reports broke yesterday of Guardiola being offered a sizeable €13 million salary by Super Lig side Trabzonspor, which would have seen him manage ex-Premier League rival Salah.

The Spaniard has previously been outspoken in his praise for the Egyptian; when both he and Salah left their respective clubs last term, Guardiola filmed a video message for the Liverpool icon, expressing his admiration.

"He was a headache. Salah, [Andrew] Robertson, all these players deserve my huge respect," said the ex-Manchester City boss. "I think for the way we played, [Manchester] City, it was perfect for them. Space in behind and having incredible deliveries with [Trent] Alexander-Arnold, with Robertson," Guardiola continued, reflecting on their iconic Premier League rivalry.

According to AS Newspaper, the Spaniard’s agent has since confirmed: "Pep will not coach any club or national team this season,” amid talks of Guardiola trading in the Premier League for the Super Lig.

Since securing Salah’s services, Trabzonspor have emerged as an economic superpower in Turkey — and well-positioned to sever Galatasaray’s unbroken grip on the Super Lig title.

Their rivals are gunning for Turkish top-flight history: a fifth-successive trophy, which would bring their Super Lig title haul to 27.

78 teams have featured in the competition since its inception, with just six lifting the silverware. Trabzonspor, who hold seven, are the only non-Istanbul side to have won multiple Super Ligs.

Should Guardiola have chosen to manage in Turkey — which he still might do, beyond 2026-27 — then his journey with Trabzonspor could have mirrored that of his Premier League exploits.

With Manchester City, the Spaniard raised his side from infrequent English top-flight champions, to possessing the second-most titles in Premier League history.

Guardiola was rumoured to have earned over £20 million annually with the Cityzens; in contrast, the reported €13 million offered by Trabzonspor pales.

How is Mohamed Salah faring in the Super Lig, and can Trabzonspor win the title?

Since leaving Liverpool — where he ended his Anfield reign as the club’s highest-ever Premier League goalscorer and assist provider — the Egyptian has enjoyed Super Lig football.

In three domestic starts for Trabzonspor, Salah has struck four goals and recorded an assist. Two of those contributions arrived last week, as his side decimated Genclirbirligi 5-0 at Papara Park.

The Turkish top-flight side sit fourth in the Super Lig table, with a home clash against Galatasaray set to be played next Saturday. This evening, Salah’s men take on Konyaspor at 6pm BST.

It hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for the Egyptian, who was present on the pitch for both events in Trabzonspor’s two-leg Europa League qualifier.

Against Hungarian side Ferencvaros, Salah’s team endured a 5-0 (agg.) humiliation. In the away leg, which ended 4-0 to their competitors, then-manager and former Trabzonspor player Faith Tekke resigned post-match.

The club’s board did not accept his resignation; however, after losing 2-1 away versus newly-promoted side Amed, in which Salah opened the scoring, Tekke was allowed to leave.

Huseyin Cimsir oversaw their romp against Genclirbirligi last weekend, and will remain at the helm until Trabzonspor locate a permanent manager.

With a win this evening, Salah’s men are likely to claim second position in the Super Lig table. Their search for a new manager, with Guardiola ruled out until late 2027, continues.
