An expert in lip reading has revealed exactly what Pep Guardiola really said to Jan Paul van Hecke after Brighton's 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Manchester City's defence of their Premier League title took another hit on Sunday afternoon as they lost 2-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

After the match, City boss Guardiola was spotted having a heated exchange with Brighton defender Van Hecke, leading many to question what exactly the manager could have said.

And now, an expert lip reader has analysed the post-match footage and revealed what the Spaniard really said to the young defender.

Lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman spoke to The Daily Mail after reviewing the footage and revealed exactly what was said between the two men after the match.

Freeman believes that Guardiola asked the defender questions after the match like 'Are you joking?', followed by 'Are you serious?' and 'You don't do that'.

The City manager then continued, adding: "You asked for…crying", and then, "Are you crying?"

Guardiola then asked whether the Brighton defender was 'proud of it', and this time the Dutchman cooly responded: "Sure".

Freedman claims hat Guardiola then comments: 'Fair play for that…' and Van Hecke, confused, asks 'Why?'.

The City boss then speaks into Van Hecke's ear, making his comments impossible to read, but when he moves away he appears to add: "No come on baby... No...

"No, let's go clap. You played a good game. I still like to congratulate you.

"Congratulations, anyway… Enjoy your night."

When asked about the incident after the game on Saturday, Guardiola claimed he told the defender: "That he was strong with Erling and when Erling then stands up, you have to stand up, he cannot go to the grass. Stay strong, no? You pull him all the game then after the fight you stay there.

"But he played a really good game and congratulations to Brighton."

Van Hecke also played the moment down, saying after the game: "We were just speaking about the foul at the end in the box. He asked me what happened in the box and I explained.

"He congratulated me. I said they had a great team. He is a great manager.
