Jamie Carragher was embroiled in a heated debate with a Manchester City fan during discussion over the 115 charges of breaking financial rules hanging over the Premier League leaders.

Carragher, who featured on the latest episode of The Overlap, debated with Lawrence Bury aka 'Buvey', about just where City's success has come from over the past decade.

The Sky Blues are currently fighting a court case from the Premier League over an alleged 115 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018.

Controversy has surrounded the subject in the last few years with allegations against the club's owners that they used inflated sponsorship deals to help fund transfers and hide player salaries.

Carragher held grudge with the fact City were above European powerhouses Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid given the sheer amount of supporters they have worldwide.

"The idea when I see teams who bring the most money in and I see Man City above Barcelona, Real Madrid and Man Utd is just nonsense," the former Liverpool defender began.

"I don't care how successful you are, that can't happen it is impossible.

"There is no way they are above Real Madrid, they win the Champions League every year!

"It is absolute nonsense."

Buvey hit back by suggesting that City's on-field success has led them to this position while also citing the fact his side have sold over £400 million worth of academy talent in recent years.

"All I am saying is there is a level of sporting excellence that has been achieved on the pitch," responded the City fan.

"The way we lambast City fans is embarrassing for football culture."

Pep Guardiola's side have achieved huge success since his appointment back in 2016.

The reigning top-flight champions have won eight titles since 2011, including an unprecedented four in a row, and claimed six League Cup successes in that time period too.

City also won the Treble back in 2023 by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, equalling the same feat achieved by crosstown rivals Manchester United back in 1999.

According to Transfermarkt, since 2008, City's net transfer spend amounts to roughly €1.59 billion ($1.32 billion).
