Liverpool Earn Unexpected Windfall Thanks to Brendan Rodgers

The Premier League champions are set to receive a financial boost

Liverpool are set to receive an unexpected financial boost thanks to their former manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman joined Liverpool from Swansea City in 2012, and came agonisingly close to ending the club's long-wait for a Premier League title in the 2013/14 season, finishing just two points behind Manchester City.

Rodgers was sacked in October 2015 with Liverpool sitting tenth after eight games, and was replaced by Jurgen Klopp, who went on to win the Premier League and Champions League as well as several other major trophies.

Since leaving Liverpool, Rodgers has gone on to a successful management career.

He won several trophies with Celtic, before returning to England where he guided Leicester City to FA Cup glory.

The 52-year-old re-joined Celtic in June 2023 and has won the previous two Scottish league titles with the Glaswegian side.

After seven games of this season, Celtic currently sit second behind Hearts, who have made an impressive start.

Now, in an attempt to bolster their squad, Celtic are reportedly set to sign Bobby Clark from Red Bull Salzburg in January for £6 million, according to The Times.

Clark, who is currently on loan at Derby County, has made 10 appearances so far this season.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined Salzburg in the summer of 2024 for £10 million, linking up with Jurgen Klopp's former assistant Pep Lijnders.

Importantly for Liverpool, they included a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause, meaning they are now set to receive £1.05 million should the deal go through.

Who is Bobby Clark?

Clark is a 20-year-old English midfielder, who began his academy career at Birmingham City, before moving to Newcastle United.

He then joined Liverpool in 2021, where his impressive performances for the youth team earned him a spot on their pre-season tour in 2022.

He made his first-team debut in August 2022, coming on as a substitute in a 9-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.

Clark only featured sporadically under Klopp, but did play in the EFL Cup final when a youthful Liverpool side defeated Chelsea 1-0 in extra time.

He signed a five-year contract with RB Salzburg in 2024, but struggled for regular gametime in the Austrian Bundesliga, making just seven league starts last season.

That led to a loan move to Derby County, where he has continued his development in the Championship.

Clark now looks set to move to Celtic Park, where he would be tasked with trying to help the team to a fifth successive league title.

With Old Firm rivals Rangers are in turmoil following the sacking of Russell Martin, Celtic are expected to battle it out with Hearts for the title.

The Edinburgh side are attempting to become the first club other than Celtic or Rangers to win the Scottish league title since Aberdeen in 1985.
