Joey Barton has been slammed over a post he shared on social media following the shocking scenes at Liverpool's title parade, where multiple fans were injured after a car crashed into fans.

Massive crowds flocked into the city to celebrate Liverpool's 20th league title, lining the streets to get a glimpse of Arne Slot's men riding through on the bus.

But the celebrations were overshadowed after reports of a car mowing down supporters on Water Street in the city centre.

A flurry of shocking images emerged on social media, with Merseyside Police posting a statement confirming the incident and the detaining of the man responsible.

After eyewitnesses spoke of Liverpool supporters smashing the car in response to the individual's horrific actions and officers moving pedestrians out of the way, the police issued a second statement where they confirmed a 53-year-old white British man from the area had been arrested.

Police asked people "not to speculate on the circumstances" but former Newcastle and Marseille midfielder Barton appeared to do that on X.

Joey Barton called out by fans for post about Liverpool incident

In a post which he later removed, Barton, from Liverpool, said: "Thoughts are with all the football fans celebrating their teams title victory.

"This is horrendous. Everyone knows what's gone on. When will it stop [prayer emoji]."

Barton then edited the tweet, specifically the line, "Everyone knows what's gone on" and "When will it stop".

But fans could still see the initial version and promptly called out the 42-year-old for what he wrote.
