Police have confirmed further details about the man detained at the scene of a major incident at Liverpool's Premier League title parade.

On Monday night, the Reds' 20th league title celebrations were overshadowed by a horrific incident in the city centre as footage showed a number of supporters being mowed down by a black car on Water Street.

Emergency services were quick on the scene in the form of ambulances, police vans and an air ambulance.

After multiple accounts on social media, Merseyside Police issued a statement where they said they were "dealing with reports of a road traffic collision" and that a male had "been detained".

As further information was released and eyewitnesses described what they saw, police confirmed the individual arrested is a 53-year-old white British man who lives locally.

Revealing enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances, they also asked for the public to not speculate and send over any useful footage to the service or Crimestoppers.

"We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre," the statement from a spokesperson read.

"We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

"We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784.

"Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
