An eyewitness has given an account of the shocking incident which saw a number of people injured at Liverpool's Premier League title parade.
Hundreds of thousands of Liverpool supporters lined the streets to celebrate the Reds' 20th league title, making up for the experience they were denied in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But on Monday evening footage circulated showing a black car striking pedestrians on Water Street, a central road in the city centre.
After a flurry of images and reports on social media, Merseyside Police issued a statement confirming that a male had been detained after a car collided with members of the public.
"We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre," the statement read.
"We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.
"The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.
"Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them."
The North West Ambulance Service, Liverpool City Council and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also weighed in with statements.

Sky News spoke to a Liverpool supporter who witnessed the horrifying incident unfold. Natasha Rinaldi described what she saw in detail from a friend's window and the response from the public and police after pedestrians were ran over by the black people car.
"I was with my friends and my friend lives in the street where it all happened," she said.
"We saw the parade from her living room by the window and were having a great time.
"We heard screams and it was so loud. They sounded desperate. We looked at the window and we saw that a car had ran over people. There was a woman stuck over the car.
"People started rushing to try and go after the driver and they tried to break the car. The police, they did everything to block and push people away.
"Some of my friends were down there and the car was so near them."
The exact number of injured people has not been confirmed, with further information set to be released in due course.
The PM described what happened as "appalling" and said his thoughts are with "all those injured or affected”.
