Liverpool set to 'break club record' and give biggest contract in history to key player

Liverpool are reportedly ready to smash their wage structure to tie down a key player to a new deal.

Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement earlier this year confirming he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season plunged the future of many of the club’s star players into doubt.

The German manager oversaw a midfield rebuild during the summer where Jordan Henderson and Fabinho left the club to make room for new arrivals Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Despite battling injuries within the squad, Liverpool have performed admirably, sitting on top of the Premier League with a Carabao Cup already in the bag and a chance at European glory in the Europa League.

As well as replacing Klopp, Liverpool face some tough decisions as the contracts of their key players start to run down.

Mohamed Salah has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and Liverpool rejected a £150m offer from Al-Ittihad in the final days of last summer’s transfer window, his current deal is set to expire in 2025.

Club captain and vice-captain, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, are also out of contract in 2025 but the latter being heavily linked with Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold has been at Liverpool since the age of six but Real Madrid reportedly believe they can take advantage of his contract situation and bring him to the Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti is set to be disappointed if new reports are to be believed with Liverpool set to table a club record offer to the 25-year-old in order to tie down his long-term future.

Liverpool’s offer to Alexander-Arnold is set to be bigger than any deal ever handed to Van Dijk or Salah according to Football Insider.

The same report suggests the England international is flattered by reports linking him with the La Liga giants but has stated his intentions to remain with his boyhood club.

Alexander-Arnold is believed to be currently earning around £180,000-per-week at Anfield, with Salah currently the club’s top earner after signing a record-breaking deal back in 2022.

Earlier in the season, Van Dijk clarified comments on his own future, stating no decision has been made as to whether he will remain when Klopp departs.

He said: “I am fully committed to the club and I love it. I love each and every second. I am the captain and we are going to go for it all and let's see how that goes.

"He is just a human being, he is a bit of a father for us as the squad, he has been that steady figure for so many years and it is going to be strange not having him next season.

"But I do not want to speak too much about it because we are still in the mix of it, still focused on things we want to achieve."
