Arne Slot's future takes shock twist days after Liverpool sacking

Arne Slot’s future has taken a surprise twist after the Dutchman was linked with a huge job in the days after his Liverpool sacking.

Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2025, was sacked on May 30 after failing to impress during his second season at Anfield, with the Reds finishing fifth and ending the campaign without a trophy.

The Dutchman has since been replaced by former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, with the Spaniard’s arrival confirmed by the Merseyside club on Thursday (June 4).

Meanwhile, Slot has been linked with an instant return to the dugout, with reports suggesting he is among the favourites to become Marco Silva’s successor at Fulham.

He has also been tipped to become the next Netherlands manager should Ronald Koeman leave the role after the World Cup.

Koeman, who has been the side’s head coach since 2023, will see his current contract expire after the tournament.

The 47-year-old was also among the candidates to succeed Massimiliano Allegri at AC Milan, with Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claiming talks had already begun between Slot and the Serie A side.

According to Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan, Liverpool’s decision came as a surprise to Slot, who “firmly believed” he would be at the helm next season.

Van der Kraan claimed that the former Feyenoord boss would be “very much up” for managing the Dutch national team.

“If Ronald Koeman steps down after the World Cup, there is a vacancy with the Dutch national team,” Van der Kraan said.

“I think Arne Slot is very, very much up for that; he’s probably the ideal candidate.

“He can play his Dutch style of football – the passing, attacking style, whatever you call it. I think the Dutch would be happy to have him.”

Slot to carefully consider future

However, contrary reports from Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claim that Slot “wants to carefully consider” his next role, while also stating that his arrival at AC Milan is now highly unlikely, with former Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino continuing to be linked with the vacancy in northern Italy.

Milan finished fifth in Serie A last season, failing to qualify for the Champions League for a second consecutive campaign.

Slot has previously managed Dutch clubs Cambuur, AZ and Feyenoord.
