Fans have universally praised Kate Abdo for her 'inspirational' speech in addressing a controversial on-air comment made by Jamie Carragher.

The Liverpool legend made the controversial joke during Tuesday's CBS Sports broadcast of the Champions League match between Arsenal and Porto.

The joke surrounded Abdo's recently announced relationship with boxing trainer Malik Scott, and Carragher was the subject of criticism on social media once a clip of the comment was posted online.

Neither Carragher nor Abdo made any public comment between the conclusion of last night's show and the beginning of tonight's broadcast.

The show consists of the usual punditry duo of Carragher, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry - leading Abdo perfectly into her opening monologue which addressed the situation.

She said: "This group has been together now for three and a half years. I grew up with a brother, and it feels like I've gained three more here. Let me introduce you to the group again."

After introducing Henry as the 'golden child', she said of Carragher: "Then there is the middle child. Jamie Carragher. Chip on his shoulder. Capable of saying anything for attention.

"Does he go too far sometimes? Absolutely. Does he apologise? Yes he does. But all of us have that annoying family member that we all love and accept."

You can watch her full speech below.

In response to the speech, fans were full of praise for the CBS Sports host for the way in which she handled the situation.

One wrote: "Fair play to Kate Abdo - handled that with class."

Another said: "Nicely done in fairness. She got some jabs in there."

A third added: "Exactly how you address it, unreal."

A fourth stated: "Best way to address it, that was inspirational."

A fifth wrote: "Brilliantly handled by Kate. Class."

And another added: "Kate Abdo is the undisputed best in the business."
