Emma Hayes has broken her silence after ITV’s World Cup studio came in for criticism, with some comparing it to a “kitchen”.
Despite being the USWNT head coach, Hayes is currently working as a pundit for the British broadcaster at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The former Chelsea boss has been tasked with providing tactical insight from a section of the studio using a small blackboard and chalk rather than a digital pad, which most broadcasters have become accustomed to.
During England’s 4-2 World Cup opener win over Croatia on June 17, some fans compared the set to a kitchen due to the studio also featuring a brown chest of drawers, with a blackboard pinned to a brick wall just above it.

Some social media users made derogatory, sexist comments after spotting the studio set-up, forcing ITV to make a subtle change ahead of their coverage of Brazil’s 3-0 win over Haiti on June 20.
The broadcaster replaced the chalk with magnets, a move which didn’t go unnoticed as fans weighed in online.
One said: “Emma Hayes’ tactics set-up has improved. ITV must have seen the feedback. No more noughts and crosses; the magnets make it look so much better. Good analysis as well – she broke down what Brazil are trying to do in a matter of moments.”
Another added: “ITV upgrading Emma Hayes to magnets from chalk is the least they could have done… now get her out of the kitchen-looking studio so people will actually listen to what she’s saying… she’s a great tactician.”
While a third commented: “They finally gave Emma Hayes magnets for the tactics board. No more noughts and crosses.”

Meanwhile, Hayes also appeared to address the matter while providing analysis of Brazil’s victory.
After saying, “Let’s focus on the first half in particular,” she then cheekily aimed a dig at viewers by adding: “I know that’s a challenge for some of us at home.
“But I’m going to encourage us to look at some of the things going on in the game.”
Then, following analysis of the rotations between Brazil’s attacking players, she commented: “I’m sure you will see that when you watch the first half, so pay attention.”
Hayes is one of the most successful female coaches, having guided Chelsea to seven Women’s Super League titles, including five successive triumphs between 2020 and 2024.
ITV has not responded to the criticism publicly.
