Jose Mourinho Steps In After Crowd Incident During Chelsea vs Benfica

Chelsea are in UEFA Champions League action against Benfica.

Jose Mourinho had to intervene following a crowd incident during Chelsea vs Benfica.

On Tuesday night, the 25/26 UEFA Champions League campaign continued with matchday two of eight.

Premier League giants Chelsea are looking to bounce back from the weekend's defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion by welcoming Benfica to Stamford Bridge.

Ahead of the clash, all the attention was on Mourinho, after the ex-Chelsea boss was appointed Benfica manager, following Bruno Lage's sacking.

As expected, Mourinho, who enjoyed two spells at Stamford Bridge, was given a warm welcome by Chelsea fans.

As per journalist Ben Jacobs, Mourinho was seen blowing a kiss at the home crowd after fans chanted his name just two minutes into the match.

Jacobs wrote: "Two minutes in and Jose Mourinho’s name is sung. He responds by blowing kisses."

Mourinho was also seen gesturing to the Benfica supporters after they reportedly threw objects at former player and now Chelsea star, Enzo Fernandez.

The 'Special One' was seen walking down the touchline towards the Benfica fans with his hand raised as he looked to diffuse the situation.

Fernandez was in front of the away section as he was preparing to take a corner for the hosts.

Speaking ahead of returning to his former club, Mourinho said: "It's not something that gives me an incredible pleasure, but I block my emotions and tomorrow I’m just going to do my job the best I can, and my job is to try to help my team.

"I’m always motivated in every match, it doesn’t matter the opponent. Maybe now is a bit different, maybe tomorrow after the match is a bit different. But during the match, I don't think I'm going to have any kind of emotion in relation to that."

However, Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge got off to a torrid start as Chelsea went 1-0 up after Richard Rios scored an own goal with 18 minutes on the clock.

Domestically, Benfica are currently third in the Portuguese top flight with 17 points, one beind Sporting Clube de Portugal and four adrift of leaders FC Porto.
