Cole Palmer finally missed a penalty for the first time in his professional career in Chelsea's visit of Leicester City on Sunday.

The 22-year-old is one of the most reliable penalty takers around, displaying a remarkable calmness from 12 yards and boasting a perfect record for club and country.

However, it came to an end on Stamford Bridge. After Chelsea were awarded a spot-kick in the first half, Palmer stepped up and hit the ball low and to the left of Mads Hermansen.

However, the Dane produced a fine stop to deny Palmer and push the ball past the past.

The miss is Palmer's first since he rattled the crossbar in an FA Youth Cup final shoot-out for former club Manchester City against Liverpool in 2019.

After that disappointing moment as a youngster, Palmer developed into a fine penalty taker and scored his first against England teammate James Trafford in October 2023.

Palmer became Chelsea's primary taker and proceeded to score his next 16 in competitive games, including 12 out of 12 in the Premier League and his first goal for England in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina prior to Euro 2024.

The Chelsea No.20's form has gone off the ball in recent weeks and he hasn't found the net or assisted in his last six Premier League appearances.

One fan on X said: "Key difference between missed and saved. A very good penalty by Cole Palmer just unfortunate for him the keeper guessed correctly and got to it."

A second commented: "I’m waiting to hear what Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have to say about this Cole Palmer’s penalty miss and his terrible form."

A third added: "First goalkeeper to save Cole Palmer penalty. He should frame it and hand it in his room. It’s not easy man."

Another weighed in: "People were just waiting for Cole Palmer to miss a Penalty…this really tells you a lot about life."

A fifth user stated: "I’m sorry but Cole Palmer still remains the best penalty taker in the league scoring 12 out of 13 penalty goals. Missing one penalty doesn’t mean he’s a bad player."
