Champions League draw recap: Man City take on Real Madrid while Arsenal get tricky tie

Champions League draw recap: Man City take on Real Madrid while Arsenal get tricky tie

The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and final takes place today.

The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals, semi-finals and final took place this morning in Nyon, Switzerland.

There were no seeds or restrictions for the draw, meaning it threw up some mouth-watering ties.

Defending champions Manchester City were drawn against 14-time champions Real Madrid, with the winner of that heavyweight tie on a collision course with the victor of Arsenal versus Bayern Munich.

On the other half of the draw Atletico Madrid take on Borussia Dortmund while Paris Saint-Germain face Barcelona.

Below is a recap of everything that happened in the draw.

KEY Points

  • The draw recap

That's all folks

That's all we and our close personal friends at UEFA have time for.

There are some heavyweight ties on the horizon. I have my money on Real Madrid winning the entire competition because I'm a realist and well, a coward.

All the best!

Unlikely cast in the Champions League final

Elsewhere, one of Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, PSG or Barcelona will be in the Champions League final this year. That's a surprise.

Tough draws for Guardiola and Arteta

Arsenal have a history of getting battered by Bayern Munich. You can almost see a Harry Kane winner already.

Should they make it through however, they have been dealt the mammoth task of going toe to toe with either 14-time winner Real Madrid or current champions City.

Welcome back to the big time.

Meanwhile, Guardiola won't be best pleased about the prospect of taking on the riches of Real, who boast a line-up that includes Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Eduardo Camavinga. He won't be too happy by the prospect of playing Arsenal either.

Let's recap

Arsenal vs Bayern Munich

Atletico Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid vs Man City

Paris Saint-Germain vs Barcelona

The semi finals will then see:

Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona.

Arsenal or Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid or Manchester City

They have now determined that one of Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona will be the home team in the final, which is perhaps the most pointless part of the draw.

Meanwhile Arsenal or Bayern Munich will take on Real Madrid or Manchester City. Rough draw for Arteta.

So now we're onto the semi-finals...

The winner of Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund, will welcome Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona.

That means Paris Saint-Germain will take on Barcelona.

The 14-time winners will take on current holders Manchester City! Tasty tie.

Next is European powerhouse Real Madrid.

They will face Borussia Dortmund.

Next out is... Atletico Madrid

They will take on... Bayern Munich

Arsenal are the first name drawn.

Let's go!

Okay it's about to begin. I promise.

Chitter-chatter from Mikel

Ahead of the draw remember there is no country protection or seedings at this stage.

By the way, John Obi Mikel is still in decent knick. Fair play. He's is talking about Chelsea' historic run to Champions League glory in 2012.

John Obi Mikel is here

Giorgio Marchetti, who looks exactly like Claudio Ranieri, will be taking charge of the draw.

Helping him will be John Obi Mikel, of Chelsea and podcasting fame.

We need to get through some preamble

I am currently watching a montage of Champions League highlights so you don't have to.

Then there may be some polite chatter to warm up the executives at UEFA headquarters. We'll get there.

Here we go

The Champions League music is playing, a bloke in a suit is talking in convoluted UEFA sentences. The draw is kicking off.

Champions League draw simulator

We decided to simulate our own Champions League draw ahead of today's official results and it threw up some interesting ties.

We applied the same rules as the official draw: There was no seeding, while from this stage onwards two sides from the same nation can meet in the two-legged last-eight ties.

Check it out here.
