Nicklas Bendtner caught up in horrific knife attack in New York as CCTV footage emerges of incident

The former Arsenal striker has opened up on the incident.

Nicklas Bendtner has confirmed he was pictured in CCTV footage shortly before one of his friends was stabbed in New York.

The former Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Copenhagen striker, 36, was walking with his entourage in Manhattan's Upper West Side last week when a terrifying sequence of events played out.

CCTV footage shows the group walking out of shot and seconds later, a bearded man sprinted in the direction of Bendtner and his friends with an object clutched in his left hand.

The perpetrator, who was later confirmed by police as Joshua Zinberg, 25, could then be seen running in the opposite direction.

As per Danish publication B.T, local police say the man shouted "f*** you guys" after the stabbing.

Bendtner has since confirmed that it was him in the CCTV footage. "Yes, I can confirm that it is me in the video," he told B.T.

"Could it have been me who was attacked? I have no comment about that. But I can confirm that it’s me on the video – it’s hard to run away from. The victim, a former professional soccer player, was walking with friends."

A report from The New York Post claim the victim was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in New York, where he was treated for non-life-threatening facial injuries.

The perpetrator has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault, after his mother reportedly identified her son as the assailant after spotting him during television coverage of the incident.

Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York, released a statement following the incident.

"We walk past people every day that we know they do not have the ability to make the right decision to take care of themselves," he said.

"This is a problem that was created when we closed the psychiatric facilities many years ago. We closed them without giving people the support that they deserve."
