Sadio Mane refused to go down and win an 'easy' penalty during Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Sheffield United - with fans thinking it shows why players throw themselves to ground.

Curtis Jones and an own goal from Kean Bryan saw Liverpool stop the rot and win their first game in five.

The contest was drawing to a close and Mane drifted into the Blades box to take on Ethan Ampadu.

Ampadu lunged at Mane and the winger didn't go down, instead staying on his feet and letting the ball go for a goal kick.

Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe remarked: "Isn't it great to see Sadio Mane stay on his feet there?

"There is some contact there but he stays on his feet. Really good."

While viewers have praised Mane's sporting conduct, many believe it shows a clear issue in English football.

Liverpool remain in sixth place but are just two points off West Ham United in the final Champions League spot.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has declared coming in the top four is now his side' goal for the season.

He told Sky Sports per Evening Standard: "This was about us showing we're still there.

"We play Chelsea on Thursday, we have to show it again. We have to win football games, we know that. There's no way into the Champions League without results. Tonight we got it, we keep going.

"Sheffield United have lost a lot but all by the smallest margin. It's clear these games stay exciting until the very end. We could have scored three in the first half.

"What we created was very good. The finishing was good enough for today, but we can improve."

United, meanwhile, remain on 11 points at the foot of the table and are 15 points from safety.
