Robin van Persie thinks that Manchester United should sign 'goal scoring machine' Edinson Cavani in the summer.

Last summer United sold Romelu Lukaku and failed to replace him in two transfer windows, despite it being quite clear before the end of last season he was likely to leave.

It led to the Premier League side being in a mad dash for a forward in the January transfer window, following to the injury to Marcus Rashford, with Odion Ighalo brought in on loan until the end of the season.

Van Persie, who helped United win their last league title in 2013, thinks that Cavani is the answer. The Dutchman was asked who United should sign, in an exclusive interview with SPORTbible, and said, "Edinson Cavani. I would definitely go for Cavani; he's very fit, he's a proven goalscorer, a goal machine, he has proven it at Napoli, PSG and Uruguay.

"With him, if he starts, he will get you 25 goals a season. I've watched him play, I've played against him, he is like a proper goalscorer. He lives by scoring goals so I'd go for him."

Cavani is available for free at the end of the season, as his contract expires, but the 33-year-old PSG striker is expected to move to Atletico Madrid.

The former Napoli forward is his current side's all time top scorer but has spent most of this season on the bench, playing just 455 minutes in the league, but has previously never failed to score less than 15 Ligue 1 goals in a campaign, despite often playing second fiddle to another striker.

His age could prove a barrier to him joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad, with the manager preferring younger players to build his squad around.

The Red Devils added to their defence last summer, with Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka added, but the only attacking player signed was Daniel James.

Alexis Sanchez joined Lukaku out of Old Trafford, and joined Inter, though he only left on loan, and with Rashford's injury and Anthony Martial's inconsistency the squad has looked short of attacking options.

Only Mason Greenwood, who many have compared with Van Persie, is available as back up and it's a lot of pressure to shoulder for a 17-year-old.

The former Arsenal forward doesn't think the Red Devils need to add any more young players to their side but, despite the signing of Bruno Fernandes in January, he does think another attacking midfielder might be necessary, with questions still hanging over Paul Pogba.

"Maybe one midfielder in a playmaker role," RvP added, "Though to be fair I watched Bruno Fernandes against Chelsea and he looks very good to me, very silky.

"But I would add one other one to put next to him, then with one player who stops the opponent attacking, that is what I like to see. I like to play with 5 attacking, creative minded players."

Would Cavani be a good signing for United?
