Aston Villa fans turn on their own club over Jamie Carragher legal action as criticism grows
Aston Villa fans have had their say after the club confirmed it was taking legal action against Jamie Carragher over “unacceptable insults” he made on the Stick to Football podcast.
Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris issued a statement on X on Friday evening which read: “Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans.
“Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football. Nassef Sawiris, chairman.”
What did Jamie Carragher say about Aston Villa?
This came after Carragher had put forward the idea of Villa head coach Unai Emery replacing Michael Carrick as Manchester United boss should the Englishman be sacked.

During a conversation about the hierarchy of English football, Carragher claimed that “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United”.
“Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again,” Carragher said on Thursday’s episode of Stick to Football.
“There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not.
“So Real Madrid will take Manchester United's best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo.
“And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they'll take their players or manager, so shut the [expletive] up, Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

As expected, the comment did not go down well with Villa fans on social media, who gave Carragher a piece of their mind, prompting the former Liverpool captain to address his comments again.
“It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd,” Carragher wrote on X.
“I hope these clown clips show me praising Emery/Villa like I have done for years & saying how pleased I was you won [the 2026 Europa League] in Istanbul.”
The former defender elaborated on his point alongside Mark Goldbridge and Becky Ives on Friday’s Overlap Daily.
“I just think Unai Emery is the best manager in the league and if you're Man Utd you're thinking 'what's the best we can get?'. I'm not saying he'll go - I'm just saying if it was me I'd ask the question,” he added.
“Certain managers are good at certain clubs and that's Emery. He reminds me of Rafa [Benitez]. I think your own ego if someone said 'that's your level' would say 'no I'm not'. That was my point.
“It's grown arms and legs. I ended up telling them to [expletive] which maybe I shouldn't have done but it was all in jest because they've been all over my social timeline. I was saying [expletive] off my socials.”
Aston Villa fans have say on Jamie Carragher legal action
Despite initially taking aim at Carragher, several Villa fans believe the club’s course of action is uncalled for and have actually defended the Sky Sports pundit.
One fan said: “I completely understand why Aston Villa and its supporters have taken exception to Jamie Carragher’s comments. They were unnecessarily insulting, dismissive and showed a remarkable lack of respect towards a football club with a proud history and recent achievements. However, being offensive, arrogant or disrespectful does not, in itself, constitute grounds for successful legal action.
“There is an important distinction between comments that are unpleasant or provocative and those that are actually unlawful. Pundits are entitled to express an opinion about the relative stature of football clubs, however misguided or condescending that opinion might be. Equally, Villa supporters are entitled to challenge it. My question is, what exactly are we hoping to achieve by pursuing legal proceedings? What is the identifiable legal wrong, what remedy is being sought, and what would constitute a successful outcome?”
Another added: “Is this the most embarrassing post by any football club to date? What on earth are Aston Villa doing?”
A third claimed: “As an Aston Villa fan, and someone who can’t stand Jamie Carragher, this is incredibly embarrassing. Taking legal action against a football pundit over a few hurty words just makes us look insecure. Why are we even giving this man more attention?”
A fourth commented: “As a Villa fan, this is a joke. Check up on freedom of speech laws. He hasn’t broken any laws.”
Carragher has yet to comment on the matter.
Villa return to action at home against Fulham later today (October 31), before travelling to the Camp Nou, where they will face Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday (November 3).
