England fan explores 'hidden Qatar' and finds apartment blocks where workers lived

Most fans won't get to see the other parts of Qatar during their World Cup trip but one did see the 'hidden Qatar' whilst supporting England

One England fan has visited the 'hidden' parts of Qatar, whilst in the country for the World Cup, coming across a migrant camp and empty apartment building.

Fans have had a very different experience of this World Cup than any previous tournament, not even being able to buy alcohol in the stadiums.

Some fans were so annoyed at the state of their accommodation that they were asking for refunds just days into the competition, and thinking of going home.

One fan has now taken a trip to see a very different side of the country, with England fan Rob Dawley discovering an empty bunch of apartment blocks and a 'migrant camp.'

You can see the video of what he found below:

Dawley, a former butcher, travelled from Grimsby to head to Qatar in order to follow England's games during the tournament.

But he also decided to travel around the country to see parts that most of those there for the World Cup wouldn't normally get to watch.

After getting a tip from someone he knew who used to live out there, the 21-year-old set off to visit Mesaieed via several trains.

Rob explained: “I messaged my mate who's dad used to live in Qatar and asked him to recommend somewhere he wouldn't go - he gave me a list and Mesaieed was on there.

"I got on the local metro in Qatar and met someone called Hassan at the bus stop, he told me he was a migrant doctor and living in a camp nearby so I followed him.

The abandoned apartment complex would have housed World Cup construction workers.

"They didn't let me in the camp, so I got a cab to the city centre of Mesaieed and I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"I'm a sucker for an eastern European tower block, and there were 25 to 30 of them completely abandoned, I just thought this is a bit of me.

"But when I walked up there were no entry signs everywhere, I could have easily hopped the fence but I thought I’d better not - I am in Qatar.

"Luckily, I saw a security car, so I walked over and got chatting to one of them in the car and he said 'You know what mate, I'm going to give you a private tour - they're demolishing them in a few months anyway.'

"His name was Sadiq and he was an absolute top geezer."

Rob travelled around Qatar.

Rob went on to say that the apartment buildings he saw were of good quality, and imagined how much they would be worth if they were in London.

The tourist did admit he had no idea how many people they might have fit in each one, so the facilities may not have been as glamorous as first thought.

"Personally I was surprised by how decent it was and how well it was all put together.

"The infrastructure was brilliant, there were two balconies in the flat and one of the rooms had an en-suite.

"Of course, it depends how many people were staying in the flat.

"If there were six or seven per room then it would be absolutely horrible, but if you renovated that flat and put it in London it would be worth millions.

"I must say it was very eerie though, I don't think the TikTok quite captures that."
