Dayot Upamecano may have dropped the worst Champions League performance of all time

Dayot Upamecano gifted Manchester City a second goal in a poor Champions League showing for Bayern Munich.

Dayot Upamecano's display against Manchester City has been labelled "the worst Champions League performance of all time".

City put one foot in the Champions League semi-finals after a 3-0 quarter final first leg win over Bayern Munich at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Rodri gave Pep Guardiola's side the lead by opening his Champions League account in stunning style before Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland both found the net in a second half which could have easily featured more goals.

Upamecano started at the heart of Bayern's defence alongside Matthijs De Ligt but was shaky throughout.

The France international had a tough start to the clash when he slipped as Jack Grealish ran at him and he never recovered.

Haaland regularly got the better of him in their duels and his passing out from the back was less than impressive, with the former RB Leipzig man giving the ball away cheaply in key areas when put under pressure.

He nearly gifted Grealish a goal in a bizarre mix-up with goalkeeper Yann Sommer at the start of the second half but was then punished when he took too many touches for City's second.

Grealish pinched the ball off him before playing in Haaland, who unselfishly crossed for Bernardo Silva to head home the second at the far post.

For the third goal, Upamecano failed to cover himself in glory when he was caught ball watching as Haaland tapped the ball in at the far post from John Stones' header.

He had been talked about as one of the best central defenders in the business and started the World Cup final for France against Argentina.

But his reaction took a huge dive here and the 24-year-old got a good pasting on social media.

One fan wrote: "If Upamecano can be a footballer, you can be anything you wish."

Another opined: "All the good work Upamecano has done in rebuilding his reputation this season erased in one night. Shades of Varane against City from a few seasons ago. Kamikaze."

A third violated: "If this was Powerleague, you'd be asking Upamecano if he fancies going in nets for 5 mins. Just to take the edge off for a bit."

A fourth added: "Upamecano had a horrendous game against City. Completely destroyed his team's CL hopes single-handedly."

A final user joked: "Upamecano would be holding the bench for Phil Jones if they played together for a championship club.

New Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel was honest in his assessment of Upamecano's outing, admitting, "He made too many mistakes and there were "two or three situations where he lacked a bit of concentration".

The Bavarians have the difficult task of turning around the quarter-final around in the second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
