Chelsea's pre-season tour ends in chaos as penalties 'cancelled' despite 3-3 draw

Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia came to a close with a 3-3 draw with Johor Darul Ta'zim; however, this final result came about because, oddly, the penalties that were supposed to decide the game because of this draw were seemingly cancelled.

Xabi Alonso’s side will now prepare for their game next Saturday at Stamford Bridge when they host the side that he began his career at, Real Sociedad, in their final preseason fixture before they begin their Premier League campaign against their West London rivals Fulham.

The Spaniard made several changes for this friendly match against this Malaysian side, with Chelsea fans not impressed by the performance of Liam Delap, who scored two penalties in the tie, and with supporters demanding the club sell Tosin Adarabioyo after his display.

Chelsea conceded the opener after being exposed on the counter-attack with Arif Aiman tapping in at the back post from a lovely ball along the floor by Marcos Guilherme, but the Blues would equalise from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute through Delap.

The England striker would once again convert from the spot in the 61st minute to give Chelsea the lead before Johor Darul Ta’zim equalised just three minutes later.

The Malaysian side would score in the 86th minute remaining, but the Blues would equalise a minute later as Cristian Glauder turned the ball into his own net, meaning the game finished 3-3, taking it to penalties.

However, the penalties did not take place, with it being suggested by the CFC+ commentary team that the penalties didn't happen because of bad tempers on the pitch.

A Chelsea official could be overheard saying 'it's written in the contract' on the CFC+ broadcast.

Several fans online have taken to social media to express their confusion over what took place, as it appeared from the live coverage that the Chelsea team were ready to take the penalties.

Tensions were high throughout the match, with several tough challenges being made, while Tosin was seen on more than one occasion in a tussle with the opposition, defending his players after what he deemed rough tackles and letting the referee know what he thought of some of the challenges.

Either way, it is a chaotic end to Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia, with the team now set to travel home to England to complete their preparations for the upcoming campaign.
