Manchester United fans will be hoping Christian Eriksen performs at Old Trafford at the same level he did for Brentford last season.

The Denmark international has signed for the Red Devils on a free transfer after his short-term deal with Brentford expired on June 30.

He has signed a three-year contract and becomes the second signing of the Erik ten Hag era following the capture of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.

Brentford were desperate to keep him in west London but Eriksen, formerly of Spurs and Inter Milan, has now stepped up to join United in his third Premier League move.

After making a full recovery from his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 and resuming his football career, Eriksen shone for the Bees in the 11 games he played.

And one of his best performances came against United, his new employers. Brentford lost 3-0 on the night but Eriksen was seriously impressive and proved he's still one of the best playmakers around.

He was Brentford's creative hub, conjuring up a display full of creativity. Some of his deliveries, whether from open play or set-pieces, were just dreamy and one would expect United's attacks to benefit hugely from his invention.

United conducted an extensive medical given the events of last summer and the fact Eriksen had to be fitted with a ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator).

But Eriksen got the all-clear and is desperate to link up with his new teammates.

"Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started," Eriksen told United's official website.

"I have had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford many times but to do it in the red shirt of United will be an amazing feeling.

"I have seen Erik [ten Hag]'s work at Ajax and know the level of detail and preparation that he and his staff put into every day. It is clear that he is a fantastic coach.

"Having spoken with him and learned more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I am even more excited for the future.

"I still have major ambitions in the game, there is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey."

Eriksen has played 278 times in the Premier League, scoring 52 goals and providing 66 assists. The incomings at United are expected to continue with the £46 million arrival of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.
