A man who died in a tragic cliff diving accident while his family watched on has been identified as a former professional footballer.

Mourad Lamrabatte was on holiday in Santa Ponsa near Magaluf with his wife and kids when he decided to jump off a huge 35-metre cliff into the water below.

In video captured by his own partner, Lamrabatte can be seen looking over the cliff face before hurling himself off the end of it.

The stunt ultimately ended in tragedy with the 31-year-old plummeting to his death after he collided with the rocks on his way down.

In the clip, you can hear his wife screaming "oh my god" as she and her children were helpless as they watched on.

When the distressing video was released, the man's identity remained unknown, although it has since been confirmed that he is in fact Mourad Lamrabatte.

Lamrabatte actually played football professionally for Dutch outfit SBV Vitesse and only hung up the boots recently.

When news broke of Lamrabatte's tragic passing, a bunch of people paid their respects online, including his former club.

“Vitesse has received the sad news that Mourad Lamrabatte has tragically died,” the Eredivisie side said in a statement via social media.

“The former Jong Vitesse striker had just turned 31.

"He wore the club colours during the 2010/2011 season, when he was part of the U23 team which won the U23 cup that season.

“In July 2010 he scored in a first team exhibition game.”

A club spokesman added: “Vitesse wishes Mourad’s family and friends a lot of strength in coping with their great loss.”

Autopsy results found that Lamrabatte did not die directly as a result of his injuries, but rather from drowning in a state of semi-consciousness.

It's understood local police are still conducting an investigation into the incident.
