A WWE legend has dropped what could be a major hint over the identity of Brock Lesnar's final opponent.

Lesnar, 48, returned to WWE last August at SummerSlam following a two-year absence.

'The Beast Incarnate' defeated John Cena at Wrestlepalooza the next month in a match that was met with mixed reviews by fans, and has made sporadic appearances since then.

Prior to his comeback, Lesnar had not made a WWE appearance since he was first implicated, and later named, in Janel Grant's sex trafficking lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE. He is not a defendant in the case.

Since Lesnar's return, WWE legend Cena has officially retired from professional wrestling, while AJ Styles is set to call time on his iconic career during 2026.

At 48 years of age, it isn't clear as to how long Lesnar will remain as an in-ring performer.

In December, Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Dave Meltzer claimed that the idea of Lesnar retiring in 2026 'is not far-fetched'.

He is all but confirmed to be competing at WrestleMania 42 in April, having featured heavily in promotional material for the event.

His status for the Royal Rumble was unclear before Wednesday, until he called in to WWE co-commentator Pat McAfee's show and declared that he would be entering the Royal Rumble match.

Self Made Pro reported in December that Lesnar has been pitched to face Gunther at 'The Shows of Shows'.

The Austrian, who is a two-time former world champion, defeated Cena in his retirement match, and Styles is putting his career on the line when he takes him on at the Royal Rumble on Sunday.

WWE legend Bully Ray Dudley, who is signed to the company as an ambassador and is part of their 'LFG' reality-style series for up-and-coming talent, believes that Gunther will be the man to retire Lesnar further down the line.

Speaking on Tuesday's edition of 'Busted Open Radio', Bubba Ray explained: "Look at what is on the table for Gunther in the next six months. The potential.

"Let's look at the short-term to get Gunther to where we ultimately want him in the long-term. Retire AJ at the Rumble, bring back Brock, retire Brock at SummerSlam in his home [state] of Minnesota.

"You have now done everything that you could possibly do to make Gunther a monster who can be next level credible World Heavyweight Champion in the future."

As well as retiring Cena, Gunther also defeated Goldberg in what was his final match in 2025, and has started being referred to as 'The Career Killer' on WWE TV.

Gunther versus Lesnar was speculated upon as a potential match-up at WrestleMania 40 before Lesnar's extended absence from the company, which would have seen the pair fight for the Intercontinental Championship.

The Austrian went on to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in the history of the company, at 666 days, before dropping the title to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 41.
