Manchester United and Atletico Madrid may be in business again soon over Matheus Cunha amid Cristiano Ronaldo interest

Manchester United and Atletico Madrid may be in business again soon over Matheus Cunha amid Cristiano Ronaldo interest

Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal for Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha as the club look to add to Erik ten Hag's attack.

Manchester United are in desperate need of a new forward option, having yet to score in the Premier League this season.

The club have lost multiple attacking options this summer, and are set to lose more.

After the departures of Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata at the beginning of the summer on free contracts, Manchester United’s attacking options look thin.

Coupled with the potential sale of Cristiano Ronaldo and an injury to Anthony Martial, Erik ten Hag was suddenly down to starting the season with Christian Eriksen up front against Brighton on the opening day of the season.

The side’s only goal so far in the Premier League has been an own goal from Alexis Mac Allistar, which is incredibly alarming.

Erik ten Hag has been adamant that his side needs attack reinforcement this summer and that has mostly come in the form of interest in Ajax winger Antony, however it looks incredibly unlikely that said move will materialise this summer.

After these opening two losses to Brentford and Brighton, Manchester United are now turning their attention to Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.

The 23-year-old forward from Brazil provided 7 goals and 8 assists for Atleti last season in 1,342 minutes of football, which equates to just under 15 matches worth of minutes.

It is said that Manchester United are close to securing a £42 million move for the forward.

The player currently still has four years left on his contract, however is said to be keen to join United.

This could explain the slightly inflated transfer fee, as Atletico would be in no current position to sell.

This is not the only time Manchester United and Atletico Madrid’s names have jointly appeared in headlines, with the Spanish club interested in current Red Devil Cristiano Ronaldo.

A player whose agent, Jorge Mendes, has been offering the services of to Europe’s biggest clubs, the Madrid side have been the most receptive to the striker joining.

This has come despite huge efforts from Atletico fans to call on their club to end their interest in the player, as Ronaldo is incredibly unpopular due to his Real Madrid ties.

There have not been talks on any potential swap deal between the two clubs for Ronaldo and Cunha, despite the swap being suggested among United fans.

Despite direct talks with the player’s agents over the last few days, there is still no complete agreement between Atletico and United for Cunha.
