Tyrell Malacia Completes £14.6 Million Manchester United Move As Erik Ten Hag's First Signing

Tyrell Malacia Completes £14.6 Million Manchester United Move As Erik Ten Hag's First Signing

Finally! Manchester United have officially signed a player.

Tyrell Malacia has been confirmed as Manchester United's first signing of the window under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The 22-year-old left-back was particularly impressive for Feyenoord last term, with 50 appearances for the Eredivisie side.

He had previously caught the attention of Ten Hag, who decided to hijack Lyon's move for the player and convince him of an Old Trafford move.

Once aware of the interest from the English club, there was only ever going to be one destination for the young defender.

Despite the French club coming to an agreement with Feyenoord on a price, United jumped into the deal and was able to agree a €15 million fee, with an additional €2m in add-ons. This equates to around £14.6 million altogether for the signing.

Personal terms were not a problem with the player, and after an initial agent issue, United have been able to get the deal over the line.

It has been confirmed that the Netherlands international will have a four year contract at Old Trafford, until 2026, with an option for a further year.

Speaking on the move, Malacia said: “It’s an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager [Erik ten Hag] leading us.

“I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.

“Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt. I’ll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family.

“None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for them. Now I’m ready to focus on the future with United, and help my new club achieve success.”

This signing could mean the end of Alex Telles' Old Trafford journey.

Recent reports have suggested that the Brazilian is not thought to be up to the standard required to truly challenge Luke Shaw at left-back.

However, Malacia is believed to be ready to adjust to the demands of the Premier League and at just 22 he will be keen to further improve his abilities.

Malacia will join up with the training squad ahead of Friday's departure for the pre-season tour.

His first involvement in a United shirt could come against Liverpool in Bangkok, in United's first friendly game on 12 July.

John Murtough commented: “Tyrell is an exciting, dynamic young footballer with excellent experience for his age, including five seasons in the Eredivisie, a European final and full international honours for the Netherlands.

“We look forward to seeing him continue to develop under the guidance of Erik ten Hag and his coaching team in the years ahead.

“Everyone at Manchester United welcomes Tyrell to the club.”

Following the announcement of Malacia, Manchester United are also set to sign Christian Eriksen on a free transfer after the player agreed a three year contract in principle, subject to medical tests and an official signature.
