Manchester United are hoping midfield target, Christian Eriksen, can be persuaded to join the club ahead of Premier League rivals, Tottenham and Brentford.

BBC Reporter Simon Stone, has reported that Manchester United are hopeful they can persuade the Danish midfielder to join the club, with neither Spurs nor Brentford having currently agreed a deal with the player.

Eriksen is currently available to sign on a free, having spent the second half of the 2021/22 season at Brentford, following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2021.

Brentford are hoping to sign Eriksen on an extended contract, while Spurs are hoping to facilitate the return of the 30 year-old to boost their own midfield.

Signing the 30-year-old would be a huge boost for United ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Reds are desperate to improve the midfield options available to new manager, Erik ten Hag.

The Dane made only 11 Premier League appearances in the second half of last term with Brentford, but still managed to record one goal and four assists.

These numbers are impressive for a player who was returning from an extended period on the side-lines and demonstrate why there is such interest around Eriksen.

It is thought that the player prefers to remain in London at either Brentford or Spurs, but United are hopeful that this can be changed if the right contract proposal is offered.

Positive developments in their pursuit of Eriksen will be vital for United, as negotiations for Frenkie de Jong appear to have stalled this week, further antagonising fans who have already displayed their disappointment at a lack of concrete action in this summer window.

The Reds will be desperate to improve their squad following a poor campaign last year, with the squad lacking depth in quality and cohesion that is required to mount an effective challenge for any silverware.

Eriksen remains only one target that United are pursuing, with interest in Frenkie de Jong, David Raum, Ibrahim Sangare and Lisandro Martinez.

Securing multiple midfielders will be crucial for United, having lost Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata, following the expiration of each of their contracts. It is of the utmost significance that the club replace the quality that has left the club.

The importance of signing Eriksen has been further exacerbated by the news that Kalvin Philliphs won’t be joining the club and while Philliphs and Eriksen play differing roles, it will still be seen as a failure that needs rectifying in this transfer window.

It will be hoped by the club that Eriksen can be persuaded to join the club in the coming days, with midfield reinforcements in need at Old Trafford.

The significance of whether Eriksen is convinced to sign or not will be dependent on the result of the negotiations with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, as the club MUST sign at least one of these two targets in the centre of midfield.
